Dear Chamber Members and Friends: They are the lungs of
the great City of New York, but keeping over 2.5 million
trees and 29,000 acres of parkland in tip-top shape is no
easy task. He began his career picking up litter in East
River Park. After graduating from Middlebury College in
Vermont, he became a member of the Urban Park Rangers in
1979. From then until 1990, he served in a variety of
positions at the Department of Parks and Recreation, as
well as helping to found the Historic House Trust, a
not-for-profit organization created to preserve the
historic house museums in New York City's parks. From 1990
to 1993, he was the Director of the Annual Fund &
Major Gifts for the New York Botanical Garden. In 1996, he
was named Manhattan Borough Commissioner of Parks &
Recreation. Named to Commissioner of the Department of
Parks & Recreation by Mayor Bloomberg, he is now
overseeing the Mayor's MillionTreesNYC Program, part of
the larger PlaNYC program, a blueprint for what New York
may look like in the year 2030.
Please join us for our next Chamber Breakfast, when Adrian
Benepe, Commissioner of New York City's Department of
Parks & Recreation, will give us an update on the
condition of our parks, including the Broadway Malls, as
well as what is being done to maintain our precious green
spaces, and what you can do to help.
